Meet Kimberly

The Good Sorts at Good Sorts is a series that brings our people out from behind the scenes and into the spotlight.

Meet Kim Bussey, our Quality Assurance & Training Coordinator — and one of the warmest, most people-first leaders you’ll meet. Originally from the rugged shores of Newfoundland, Kim spent 27 years as a palliative care nurse before managing a women’s shelter and eventually joining Good Sorts. Today, she helps shape and support our teams across the Okanagan with the same care and dedication that’s defined her entire career.

We caught up with Kim to learn more about her journey, her love for the ocean, and what makes her proud to be a Good Sort.

Where did you grow up, and what’s one thing you miss (or don’t!) about it?

I grew up on the island of Newfoundland and loved waking up to the sound of the ocean just steps from my childhood home. The sea was our playground — we’d spend our days collecting sea glass and shells and dreaming about someday seeing a mermaid. We all had little boats and often caught seafood that we’d cook fresh right on the beach. I truly miss the ocean and the abundance of seafood it gifted us.

Before joining Good Sorts, what kind of work or experiences shaped your path?

I spent 27 years working in the field as a palliative care nurse. After retiring, I came out of retirement to manage a transitional shelter for high-risk women facing mental illness and addiction.

What inspired you to join Good Sorts?

I retired once again and took some time to travel, visiting my adult kids and grandbabies. After a while, I decided I needed something to keep me busy, so I applied to Good Sorts for a weekend job after reading all the great reviews. And here I am now — working full-time, loving what I do, and wouldn’t change a thing.

What do you enjoy most about your role ?

I really enjoy building strong relationships with our team. I take pride in ensuring our building cleans meet the highest standards and in training our team to take pride in their work — do it, own it, and be proud of it.

What’s one thing you’ve learned since starting that’s surprised you?

I was pleasantly surprised by how supportive the leadership team is — you’re always heard and truly valued. You’re not just an employee here; you’re seen, appreciated, and respected. At Good Sorts, both clients and employees come first and are 100% valued.

What’s your favourite memory or moment with the Good Sorts crew so far?

I have so many great memories. I remember training a new team member on how to hook up the water and chemical hoses in the janitor’s room. When it was his turn to try, neither of us realized the hose was pointed directly at me. Needless to say, I got completely soaked! We laughed so much — and he got the job.

When you’re off the clock, what activities or hobbies do you enjoy most?

I love paddleboarding, boating, travelling, and spending time painting with acrylics!

What’s your favourite local spot to eat, unwind, or spend time with friends?

I enjoy weekend campfires or hanging out at CRAFT Beer Market Kelowna with friends — the food is great, and the views of the lake are absolutely stunning.

What’s your favourite drink? (morning coffee, evening cocktail, or anything in between!)

I love my Tim Hortons coffee in the morning, and in the evening, I like to unwind with a glass of white wine or a vodka cranberry.

What’s something still on your bucket list?

I’m determined to attend another Sturgis Motorcycle Rally in South Dakota.

If you could travel anywhere tomorrow, where would you go?

I’ve travelled to many places in my lifetime, but I would love to visit Portugal someday.
